Due to modern medicine, people are living longer than they used to. However, this doesn’t talk about the quality of life seniors are having. If you want to still be able to move around and lead an active life free of pain in your 80s and 90s, you better do something about it now. If you keep your body in good shape, it leads to a slower breakdown when you are older.
There is no doubt that we are an obese and lazy society. Whereas medical advancements have made us live longer, other technological advancements have put us in a position where we’re actually unhealthy. We can now get a bazillion channels on TV and if can’t watch everything at the same time, we can always record or time shift programs. And if we still have time after watching all that TV, we can jump on our computer to chat with friends or meet them in the virutal game world instead of arranging a face to face get-together outside of the house. It is no wonder that people are out of shape and this does not bode well for their future health as senior citizens.
However, all is not lost and for those who have never followed an exercise program in the past can take it easy with low impact exercises like walking. Now, believe it or not, some people think that walking can actually harm them. They make up all type of excuses like their knees and back can’t handle it.
Now obviously, one should always check with their doctor before starting any exercise program but if your knees and back are hurting you now, you’re in pretty bad shape. Mostly, this is due to the excess weight put on the body and if your back is hurting you that much, you can get support underwear such as a lower back girdle and braces for the knees as well as a good pair of walking shoes.
The bottom line is that in order to get healthy, you need to put your best foot forward one step at a time. When you’re older, then you might really not have the chance and you’ll be wondering why you wasted all those years when you had the opportunity.
