For those who love to travel and need to extend their retirement funds, moving to foreign country is a great way to see the world and live like royalty on a modest budget. When it comes to emigrating to Cyprus, for example, one of the biggest headaches is finding out how to purchase a property in your new country. It can mean dodging some general pitfalls and investing a huge chunk of your hard earned money, but the end result however can make it all worth it.

A post-retirement home is a once in lifetime investment for most of us, so ensuring that you invest your money wisely is extremely important. When it comes to purchasing real estate outside of your country, familiarizing yourself with its many rules can help potential homeowners secure their investment.

Real Estate Fluctuates

As any real estate investor should know, real estate values fluctuate from time to time. And this piece of information can prove to be very useful if you are looking to invest in an overseas property. Sales agents have a way of honey coating even the most depressing situations. Avoid falling for these sales pitch by arming yourself with the right knowledge beforehand. This will help you understand the best time to buy a property, as well as how much harder you can negotiate for a lower price. Keep in mind that this only works when you gives yourself several months, if not years, to pick your prime location.

Varying Legal Procedures

As you are setting sail to lesser known territories, it is wise to keep track of how their legal processes work when it comes to purchasing real estate. Each country uses different guidelines that can make purchasing a home quick and easy or hopelessly complicated. Allot the right amount of time for due legal diligence, so you can ensure that you are truly buying the property from the owner and meeting all legal requirements to own a home in that part of the world. Local attorneys are your greatest asset in these circumstances.

Unsteady Exchange Rates

Other than fluctuating real estate values, you as an investor also need to look into the value of your dollar or euro. As these variables are dependent on a number of factors, they can easily go up or down, which can be the difference between a great purchase when you money is strong, versus reduced buying power for a slumping exchange rate. It is best to set your budget with a good enough buffer to leave room for adjustments and fluctuations. This helps to ensure that no matter the situation, you always have enough money saved in the bank to manage the problem.

Your dream of owning a home outside your country may be at hand, but seeing that each step is taken with careful thought assures you that you will be able to spend the remainder of your days relaxed in your home and not falling prey to a real estate trap.

In this article we explore some of the main reasons why Panama continues to attract large numbers of US retirees. The country is often featured on lists setting out the “Top Places To Retire Overseas” and the “Best Retirement Havens” compiled by organizations such as Pathfinder International and International living. Let’s find out why:

The Panamanian government has been rolling out the welcome mat for retirees for several years now. Retirees are not taxed on world income and the retirement incentive program is generously packed with a whole host of benefits and incentives.

The capital, Panama City, is a world-class business and banking hub that’s unrivaled in Central America. This together with its US dollar economy and strong GDP growth rates gives the country a sense of stability. A factor that’s highly prized by both retirees and real estate investors alike.

Panama offers top-quality health-care facilities and affordable private health insurance.

A whole series of infrastructure improvements are currently underway. The airports in both Panama City and David are being expanded and new roads are under construction in key tourism regions such as Boquete and the Azuero Peninsula. And that’s not to mention the expansion of the Panama Canal.

The country offers a wide variety of lifestyle options to choose from. It borders both the Caribbean and the Pacific, but also offers cooler weather in it’s interior mountain regions.

The country has great surf, fantastic deep sea fishing as well as some world-class dive spots.

The property market in Panama is still highly affordable, especially away from the capital city. In fact a study by RevealRealEstate.com indicates that Panama and Nicaragua are the two most affordable options in the region. Property prices in Panama are lower than in Costa Rica and Belize for example. See more on the Panama real estate market here, and details on Nicaragua real estate, here.

Like elsewhere in Central America, it is possible to live a life of luxury and spend far less than you would back at home. Much of this comes down to low labor costs. A full-time maid for example will only set you back around $150 a month.

If you are retired and are considering buying an RV, why not get one at a discount? Repossessed vehicles owned by banks or other lending institutions seem to be the most efficient way to purchase an almost new vehicle at an excellent price. However, these sales are not held at every street intersection, so you have to spend some time finding them, specially when it comes to luxury products, such as RVs. With a few tricks and a little ambition, you are on your right track on finding repossessed RVs for sale.

Nothing can be done without work, so if you want to find repossessed RVs for sale, you will have to contact all the banks and lending institutions in your area first of all. Rather than go in person, grab your phone and start making calls. You will have to go in person at some of them, but it is better to try to minimize their number. So you might find out what you need by phone.

On the other hand, you will need to knock at a lot of doors in order to find the right person to instruct you. If none of the available models in your area particularly satisfies you, get on the web and check the vehicles in the surrounding areas, even the ones around the whole country. If you find a good bargain for your dream model, it might be worth the time and money to get there and buy it.

Do not forget to check your local newspapers every day also. At some point, when a bank has too many RVs for sale, it organizes an auction to get rid of them faster. Such auctions are usually advertised for in the local newspapers.

Another smart way to find out of good bargains from others is having a friend working in secondhand cars dealership. Such agents know whenever a new car becomes repossessed and what the best places for repossessed RVs for sale are. You may even try your luck without actually knowing the agent. Though they still insist on selling their own vehicles, rather than the bank’s.

While most people look forward to migrating towards warmer climates once they retire, a lot of people are choosing to stay in homes where they have lived a significant part of their life. Retirement usually brings with it financial freedom from family-related obligations, because by this time, children have already grown up and moved out. If you are one of those who were responsible enough to set aside funds, this period in your life is supposed to provide you with a chance to finally relax and take time for things you have always meant to do, like travel or gardening seriously.

By this time, the family structure has shifted from a child-centered unit back to just you and your spouse. The family home that has withstood so many casualties from boisterous, growing children can finally take a break and is ready to be transformed to the stately, gracious home that you have always dreamed of. Finally, you will be able to put in some light-colored carpeting like you have wanted to do, but never did because it showed dirt too readily. You can also splurge on an Italian silk couch with no worries that someone wearing dirty shoes would climb up and jump on it after school. You can choose furnishings that reflect mature tastes.

In remodeling your home, you must remember that your focus will now move from considerations of child safety to those of elder safety. Consider incorporating features that will make your life easier and more convenient in your old age. For example, while using a combination shower and tub may be fairly easy for you at present, in a few years, it will likely be an accident waiting to happen. A lot of senior citizens are injured every year while getting in and out of the tub. A mere slip can cause fractures, back dislocations or concussions. For your safety, it might be a better idea to install some shower screens or shower enclosures. Other plumbing issues that you need to look out for are crumbling or leaking pipes, particularly under the sink. These can cause unnoticed wet spots that may cause you or other family members to slip.

If you have an attic or basement, ensure that you have safe, well-lighted access to these spaces. Stairways should be well-maintained and free from weak and rotting steps that can give way under you. In case you should get trapped in these areas, it might be a good idea to have an extension phone installed so that you can call in case you need help. Actually, putting extension phones all over the house will not only be more convenient, it can ensure that you can easily reach someone if you need to.

Safety features in the house become even more important when it is going to be occupied by only you and your spouse, especially if you live in a community where houses are far apart and neighbors may not always hear you call out in case of trouble. Smoke and burglar alarms are reasonable precautions in this day and age. Always make sure that yours are in prime working condition by conducting regular checks at intervals.

If you have been living in a two-storey house and using an upstairs master bathroom, it may be a good idea to make provisions for eventually moving your bedroom downstairs. While you are still very active and strong, you can start remodeling a bedroom suite on the ground floor, and use it as a guest suite in the meantime. That way, it will be ready for you when time comes that you will need it.

Now that our the baby boomer peak has reached retirement age, the entire population is experiencing a dramatic change. You see Boomers are no longer content with retiring where they were born. No, they’re on a quest to find the Best Places to retire in the World!

One publication which has contributed to this movement for decades is International Living Magazine. Simply referred to as I.L., this magazine has been exploring the concept of moving and working abroad but in recent years their primary audience, baby boomers, have been thinking more about the best places to retire abroad.

Each year International Living does a various surveys and produces research reports which examine everything from cost of living to investment opportunities both overseas and in our neighboring southern countries. One of the most popular issues of the I.L. magazine is the September issue headlined, ‘Where is the Best Place in the World to Retire?’ In this issue I.L. presents their list of the top places around the world to consider for retirement. Each year the list changes but typically not a lot. Countries move up and down the list.

For example Panama is ranked as the second best place to retire this year. For almost the past decade Panama has been in the top 5 places. This year Ecuador garners top spot. They say, “Ecuador is the World’s most affordable Haven. There’s something for everyone including beaches, highlands, jungles and historical cities.” the cost of living is ultra low too as you can still get a 4 course meal at lunch time for just two dollars, taxis are just a buck and a nice hotel room will run you just $20 a night. And real estate is equally cheap with brand new two bedroom ocean-view condos going for less than $50,000. Now all of that is music to a retirees ears. After all every retiree regardless of how much they have tucked away is concerned over whether their retirement savings will last.

If you’re wondering if there is more out there than the local retirement home may I suggest you consider doing your own little investigation into the best places in the world to retire?
